  The Holy Spirit

God's spirit isn't called the Holy Spirit without reason. What does holiness mean? To most people "holy" means serious or mystical. But to disciples, holiness is a much deeper thing. It is devotion or dedication or sanctification.

1. Is holiness an option?

Is holiness an option? These days there are many options for everything. { Give examples }

Hebrews 12:14
Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. Holiness is not an option. Lukewarmness is not an option.

1 Peter 1:15-16
15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Leviticus 11:44-45
44 I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the ground.
45 I am the LORD who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

Leviticus 19:2
"Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.

Leviticus 20:7
"'Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.

God commands us to be holy because He is holy.

2. Holiness comes from the Spirit

What makes us holy? It is the holy spirit that makes us holy.

Romans 8:5-11
5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.
8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

The result of being controlled by the spirit is life and peace

Galatians 5:16-25
16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Living by the Spirit leads to the fruit of the Spirit.

How can we claim to be God's people when we are lacking in zeal?

Romans 12:11
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

Am I a zealous Christian? Am I lukewarm or hot? Am I the "hype type"? Or are my roots deep? What is holiness to me?
